Let’s have a look at the technical characteristics of a log house’s construction. Log houses are constructed from Scandinavian pine trees from northern Finland. The walls are built from logs, rounded or planed, which are placed horizontally, one on top of the other and are connected with wooden dowels and long screws. The splicing at the corners and the intersections are made with logs’ chamfer.

ROOF: The roof is comprised of wooden beams in the appropriate size and in-between distance. Afterwards, planed wooden planks are used on top and under the beams, along with intermediary insulation material and moisture barriers. The roof is then covered by materials such as different types of roof tiles (plain, metal) or stone slabs.

Static Endurance

Wall construction using whole logs is the most appropriate for low-height structures.

The logs are cross-sectioned and spliced perfectly, thus obtaining endurance equal to that of a concrete wall and abundant sufficiency to carry the weight above them with guaranteed complete security. 

Anti-seismic properties

Seismic activity tends to strain conventional buildings due to the horizontal force’s effect on every floor above the ground. The extent of the effect depends on vertical weight distribution, structure height, position, wall placement, but mostly on the connections between walls.

Using whole logs for wall construction, we achieve minimal strain on the building’s structure due to the sturdiness of the construction and the perfect splicing and connection between walls. The result is zero damage after a seismic event.

Due to the soundness of the construction and the natural properties and behavior of wood, Log Houses have been named the perfect anti-seismic structures for earthquakes up to 10 Richter-scale.

It is worth noting that Japan is the largest market for Log Houses worldwide, mostly due to the high seismic activity in the area.
